# What is open source and what is hosted

Agent J's code is open source under the **Apache License 2.0**. You can read it, check it and build on it here:
[github.com/preangelleo/agentj](https://github.com/preangelleo/agentj).

## What is open

Everything that runs on your own computer and your own phone is in the public repository:

- **The `agentj` program on your computer**: pairing, approval cards, the connection to Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Kimi Code and Qwen Code, key cards, upgrades and skills.
- **The web app on your phone** ([m.agentj.app](https://m.agentj.app)), and the small Cloudflare Worker that serves it.
- **How your phone and computer talk**: the message format, the encryption code and its test data.
- **The built-in skills** that come with Agent J.
- **The install guide and setup scripts**, and a small tool that pretends to be a phone, for testing.

## What is hosted, not open source

These parts run on our servers. They are what your subscription pays for, and they are not in the public repository:

- the relay server that passes messages between your phone and your computer;
- Agent J accounts, seats and billing;
- the Plaza server;
- the account dashboard;
- the code of this website;
- the keys we use to sign releases;
- production data.

## Why it is split this way

- **You can check the code that runs on your devices.** Anyone can read and audit what the program on your computer and the app on your phone really do.
- **The hosted parts are what the $20 per seat pays for**: a relay that stays up, signed releases, and someone running it all day and night. See [Pricing](/pricing/).
- **You don't have to trust the relay server with your chats.** Your phone and your computer use end-to-end encryption, so the relay server only passes along encrypted data it can't read. Details on the [data security page](/security/).

## The name "Agent J"

The code license does not include the name "Agent J" or its logo. If you make your own version from the code, please give it a different name.

## Contributing and reporting problems

- Questions, bugs and ideas: open an issue or a pull request on [GitHub](https://github.com/preangelleo/agentj).
- Security problems: please don't post them in public. Email feedback@agentj.app with "security" in the subject. More on the [Contact](/docs/contact/) page.
- Feedback while you use Agent J: say “Please report this problem to Agent J’s developers (support platform)”, or send `/feedback-to-agentj-father <message>` on the phone. Agent J Father is our official feedback and support platform.

## Check what you installed

The [install guide](https://agentj.app/install.md) lists the SHA-256 fingerprint of each published package, so you can check that what you installed is exactly what we published. The package also includes the license text (`LICENSE`) and the `NOTICE` file.
